Jessica Vallia Workshop

Full Day Workshop Description

“Fine Art Portraits: Practicing Painterly”

This workshop is almost entirely hands-on. Very little slides. A lot of doing.

We’ll begin the day by photographing a fine art (hopefully musician... my FAV) portrait in studio,

walking through lighting and posing decisions in real time... why certain lighting angles, and

contrast levels are chosen and how they affect mood, depth, and painterly quality. Students will

actively observe, ask questions, and participate in shaping the final image.

In the afternoon, we’ll move straight into editing. I’ll guide you through my full fine art workflow in

LR & Photoshop, focusing on intentional choices rather than shortcuts or presets. To keep us on

track and allow you to stay present, the full edit will be recorded and provided to attendees.

What you’ll experience:

● Live fine art portrait shoot with detailed lighting & posing breakdowns

● Real time discussion of creative decision making during capture

● A full start-to-finish fine art edit in Photoshop

● Painterly techniques that enhance depth, texture, and emotion

● Color control and harmony for gallery style work

A baseline understanding of Photoshop (layers, masks, basic tools) is helpful but not required.

This workshop is structured so you can learn by watching, asking questions, and reviewing the

recorded edit afterward.

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of why fine art portraits work... not just how to recreate a

single image... and gain the confidence to apply these techniques to your own subjects and

style.
